Topps Cards That Never Were - 1977 Reggie Jackson

For this entry, I am deviating once again from my previous course of making final season cards for Hall of Famers.  This Topps Card That Never Was is for Reggie Jackson's 1976 season in Baltimore.

The 1977 Topps release features Reggie Jackson in an airbrushed Yankees' uniform/helmet, from what appears to be an Oakland Athletics' photograph.  Not a very inspiring photo as you can see below...

Also, I didn't realize that Reggie Jackson played in Baltimore until well in the '90s!  I remember when I saw the 1988 Score tribute that showed Jackson in an Oriole uniform.  I was blown away and thought it was an error/trick/etc.  I then dug out my "Total Baseball" encyclopedia and looked up Mr. October.  I couldn't believe that I had completely missed the fact that Reggie Jackson was an Oriole for one glorious summer.

So, 20 years later and armed with the firepower of Photoshop, I decided to end this travesty.  Ergo, enjoy the custom made 1977 Topps Reggie Jackson card in all it's Baltimorey goodness!

PS - I will gladly take requests, just leave a comment!

That card actually "was." But the position banner is blue not green. It was done by Topps as a Test Proof. Allegedly only about 8 of the me exists.

I first heard about it in an article Keith Olbermann wrote, he has at least one (and every other card known to exists). I couldn't find that article, but here's another one:

Here is the Olbermann article (http://keitholbermann.mlblogs.com/2011/01/01/history-that-never-was/)

I used the Test Proof picture for the card, however, the Test Proof says Yankees and the banner is blue. I ended up creating a new Orioles layer and green banner and then placing it on top of the test proof to create the Reggie Jackson Orioles card.

Thanks for the link, too!

Two posts about Reggie in a week, and I still can't tell if you like/are a fan of him... I wanna say you do, but the only way to do it is a third blog entry about Mr. O, to complete thr trilogy! It wouldn't your normal themes, but i'd accept a discussion of the cultural and gastronomic/epicurean impacts of the Reggie candy bar... ;)

I have one of those Topps Traded Zimmerman (#660) cards you need for your set, if you need/want it...(I may have two, thanks to you and/or Listia...? Have to check...)

Oh, and Happy New Year! Hope all your crowdis doing well, and Mark Reynolds as an O looks better than Reghie, and has more power! I bet one day he too is a Yankee...
